Project 2
Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality
30% Group
After conducting a site visit and data collection at the Shah Alam Botanical Gardens, we had to design a Nature Observatory Post for a chosen site. We were expected to produce site analysis design vignettes as well as drawings and a model of our observatory post.
Reflection
Getting to design for a real site was both daunting and exciting, especially when the site we were given was already so vibrant to begin with; finding a way to create something that stood out but didn't clash with the environment took a lot of thinking.
I personally considered this assignment the toughest out of the three we had this semester, mostly due to the time constraints (2 and a half weeks from the site visit until the final presentation day). It was a challenge, but it did help us learn how to manage our time and learn to not spend too long thinking about the unknowns when it comes to the design process.
As for the actual design and outcome, I would say that its key feature (the lowered platform that allowed viewers to comfortably view the surface of the lake at eye level) was ultimately successful, but our overall drawings and other details could be improved on.
